Here is a short, but useful guide to help you decide if a particular creative piece you are writing is better and more effectively presented as a poem, a story or an essay.
If
~ you develop sentences with distinctive rhythms and repetitive patterns;
~ your images are strong;
~ your sentences do not refer to a specific time and place…
Then consider crafting your piece as a POEM.
If
~ scene descriptions and dialogues are significant elements;
~ the focal points of your piece are your characters;
~ “What happens next,” becomes important…
Then consider crafting your piece as a STORY.
If
~ you wish to explore the significance of an actual event;
~ you wish to present a moral or lesson;
~ you wish to prove or illustrate a point…
Then consider crafting your piece as an ESSAY.
A short and sweet Prescription for today! Get busy writing or get busy dying.
